The Madden series is by far the most popular NFL console-game franchise in North America. It is the game of choice among many active and former NFL players, and has been a mainstay on most gaming platforms for close to a decade. And this year's version for the PlayStation, IMadden NFL 2001/I, is amazing--it's even better than the incredible Nintendo 64 version of the same name.p In terms of playability, EA Sports has added some nice new features. Players are rewarded with collectable in-game Madden Cards by performing certain tasks, which can be used to unlock secret game codes, players, stadiums, and legendary NFL teams. Also, you can trade those cards with friends using the PlayStation memory card. Enhancing the replayability of IMadden NFL 2001/I is a new two-minute drill feature that allows up to 10 players to compete for the highest score.p The game does have a couple of trouble areas. The CPU play isn't all that synched with the gameplay, resulting in some very strange calls and plays. John Madden's commentary is stocked with only a few phrases, which are used ad nauseam. While not perfect, the sound effects and crowd noises are still preferable to the whiny blips of the N64 version. From the main menu, quick race, single-player race, single-player season, two-player race, and two-player season choices are available. Quick race places you in a random car on a random track with the majority of physics options and AI quirks disabled. Drive for six laps, have some fun, and try not to wipe out. If you want to choose a specific team, driver, track, or game option, the single race and season modes are where you'll want to go. NASCAR 2001 features 37 teams and drivers from this year's racing season, including Robert Yates Racing's Dale Jarrett, Joe Gibbs Racing's Bobby Labonte, and Team SABCO's Sterling Martin. If the stock selection of drivers isn't sufficient, you can create your own drivers as well - provided you don't mind being limited to helmet color and car choice. With a fighting mode, four mini-games, and a stand-alone role-playing game (RPG), Ehrgeiz is essentially six games for the price of one. First, duke it out as one of 10 playable characters (3 of which are from the popular RPG Final Fantasy VII) in hand-to-hand and weapons-based combat. There are 11 different fighting environments to tackle, including a moving train and a hovering airship. Ehrgeiz scores points for diversity. The arsenal of warriors is comprised of various ages, nationalities, and sexes--all of whom are eager to win the ultimate fighting championship. The prize is a mysterious weapon (the strangely dubbed Ehrgeiz). There are a gazillion moves to memorize, and the fluid movement and fantastic secret weapons provide great eye candy.
In addition to fighting, players will also encounter mini-games, such as the foot race "Battle Beach" and strategy game "Battle Panel" (think Othello). This game also contains several elements that will be instantly familiar to RPG fans.
